Is Marketing over Hyped?

Is Marketing in our society over hyped? Do people actually buy stuff that they see in commercials or in magazine ads? I think marketing helps for new products that are being released into the consumer ecosystem, but for pre-existing products like Coke and Pepsi I don't think marketing makes a difference. I think their marketing dollars are the backbones to many publications and television networks, so they ads are more of a public service for cheaper mass media.

Marketing is everywhere in multiple formats. Video Ads on websites, pull-outs in magazines, television ads, e-mails, on Hulu and other video services, the radio, billboards, and with the help of Google all over the search engine and in Gmail.
